Overview

The Yugo is the car that Western motoring journalism decided to make an example of — Car Talk voted it the worst car of the millennium — and which people in the former Yugoslavia remember quite differently, as a symbol of a country that no longer exists.

History

Built by Zastava from 1980 to 2008 as a shortened derivative of the Fiat 127. Malcolm Bricklin imported it to the United States from 1985 at $3,990 — the cheapest new car in America — under the slogan "Everybody Needs A Yugo Sometime". US sales peaked at 48,812 in 1987 and totalled roughly 141,651 through 1992.

Over 794,000 were built across 28 years. The last one left the line on 11 November 2008 when Zastava stopped making cars. New owners secured the brand rights in 2025 with plans for a retro-styled revival.
