Overview
Zoox builds a robotaxi rather than a self-driving car — a symmetrical, bi-directional vehicle with no steering wheel, no pedals and no front or back, designed from scratch for a world where nobody drives it. It is owned by Amazon.
History
Founded in 2014 by the Australian designer Tim Kentley-Klay and Jesse Levinson, and based at Foster City, California. It became the first company approved for public self-driving services in California in December 2018, and Amazon acquired it in June 2020 for over $1.2 billion.
A free service launched in Las Vegas in September 2025 and a waitlisted San Francisco service followed in November 2025, with testing in Phoenix, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Seattle and Washington D.C. NHTSA granted an exemption for demonstration operations in August 2025.
