Servicing a hybrid: what is different

A hybrid is a petrol car plus an electric system, so it keeps oil changes and adds a few checks. Toyota’s annual battery health check decides whether its 10-year battery cover survives.

Hybrids sit between a petrol car and an electric one on servicing, and people tend to guess wrong in both directions — assuming either that a hybrid is just a petrol car, or that it carries EV-sized complexity. Neither is right.

Watch out

If you are buying a used Toyota hybrid, this is the single most valuable thing on this page: Toyota extends traction battery cover from five years to ten years only if an annual battery health check and routine logbook maintenance are carried out at Toyota. No annual check, no extension. Toyota’s published terms describe the cover as extended year by year with each annual health check and do not say whether a missed year can be made up, so confirm the car’s specific status with a Toyota dealer rather than assuming either way. Ask for the records before you buy. Note too that the extension covers defects and excludes capacity degradation, and is void on vehicles used for rideshare, taxi or hire work.

First, which kind of hybrid

  • A conventional hybrid (HEV) has a petrol engine and a small battery charged by regenerative braking and the engine. It does not plug in — the Green Vehicle Guide is explicit about this.
  • A mild hybrid has a small motor and battery that assist the engine but cannot drive the car alone. Typically 48V, and the Government notes these deliver around half the fuel savings of a full hybrid.
  • A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) adds a larger battery you charge from a socket, with around 50 km of electric range on most models sold here.

All three keep the engine, and therefore keep engine servicing.

What stays exactly the same

Engine oil and filter, coolant, spark plugs, fuel filter, transmission servicing where applicable, brake fluid, cabin filter, tyres, suspension and steering. A hybrid is a petrol car in all these respects, and its service schedule reflects that.

This is the honest correction to the common assumption. A hybrid does not deliver the ~40% servicing saving an EV does, because it still has everything an EV deletes.

What the hybrid system adds

  • The traction battery and its cooling. Most Toyota hybrids draw cabin air across the battery pack through a filter, commonly near the rear seat. A clogged filter reduces cooling and can trigger a hybrid battery cooling warning. Generally: battery cooling systems need periodic inspection to confirm correct operation and to assess fluid level and condition.
  • The annual battery health check, on brands that require one for extended cover — Toyota being the significant case in Australia.
  • The high-voltage system inspection, which is a specialist job and part of why hybrid servicing should go somewhere equipped for it.
  • The 12V battery, which on a hybrid does the same critical job it does on an EV: it wakes the car. Toyota warrants it for two years separately.

What gets easier

  • Brakes last longer. Regenerative braking means the friction brakes do much less work.
  • But the same caveat applies as on an EV: discs can corrode from underuse. Brake fluid still needs changing on time, calipers still need cleaning and lubricating, and low pad wear on a used hybrid is not the same as healthy brakes. Look at the disc faces.
  • Fuel system and engine wear are generally lower, because the engine spends less time running and less time at cold-start.

The battery warranties

The pattern across brands is that the headline number is the length and the substance is the conditions.

  • Toyota — traction battery cover five years standard, extended to ten years conditional on the annual health check plus logbook servicing at Toyota. ⚠ Read what that cover is: Toyota’s own disclaimer says it excludes traction battery capacity degradation, which is handled separately, and excludes vehicles used commercially — taxis, hire cars and rideshare. For the battery-electric bZ4X, separately, 8 years / 160,000 km if capacity falls below 70% of original, again subject to the health checks.
  • Hyundai — high-voltage battery 8 years / 160,000 km, with the balance transferring to a new owner.
  • MG — ⚠ which figures apply depends on when the car was first registered, which matters more on a used car than the headline number does. Registered from 1 July 2025: high-voltage battery 7 years / 150,000 km, separate from the vehicle warranty of 7 years unlimited km (extendable to 10 years / 250,000 km with exclusive authorised-dealer servicing, each service within 30 days and 2,000 km of the interval). Retailed 1 August 2024 — 30 June 2025: a 10-year / 250,000 km warranty applies, which MG stated covers the high-voltage battery. Retailed on or before 31 July 2024: 7 years / unlimited km. Check the car’s first-registration date against MG’s own warranty page before assuming any figure.
  • BYD — traction battery 8 years / 160,000 km.

Read them as conditions rather than promises, and check the service history against the specific condition.

Does a hybrid battery fail?

Far less often than the reputation suggests. The degradation data covered in how long an EV battery really lasts is drawn mainly from full EVs, but the chemistry and management are related, and hybrid packs are worked in a narrower state-of-charge band, which is gentler.

The Australian Government's general position on EV batteries — many lasting 15 to 20 years or 200,000+ km before significant degradation — is a reasonable frame. What kills a hybrid battery early is heat and a neglected cooling path, which is exactly what the annual check and the cabin-air filter address.

Where to get one serviced

Toyota Australia also states that during its capped-price Service Advantage period a hybrid costs the same to service as the equivalent petrol model, while warning that costs may rise once that period ends. The hybrid premium on servicing is deferred rather than absent.

Any competent workshop can do the engine side. The hybrid system is the part that wants someone equipped for high-voltage work, and on Toyota the annual health check has to be done at Toyota for the extension to survive.

If you would rather not be tied to a dealer, get the number for what that costs each year before you buy, and weigh it against the value of the extended cover. For most owners of a car still inside the ten-year window, keeping the extension is the better arithmetic.

Buying a used hybrid: the short list

  • Ask for evidence of the annual battery health check for every year, on brands that require it.
  • Confirm ordinary logbook servicing is complete and was done where the warranty required.
  • Look at the brake discs, not just the pad thickness.
  • Ask when the 12V battery was replaced.
  • Check the battery cooling intake and filter are clean and unobstructed — on many Toyotas it is near the rear seat, and it is easy to look at.
  • Run the free recall check and a PPSR search, as you would with any car.

If it is a plug-in hybrid, add the checks in should you buy a plug-in hybrid — above all, whether the previous owner actually plugged it in.
