Open any car listing from the last few years and you'll hit the alphabet: AEB, LKA, ACC, BSM, RCTA, AHB. Advanced Driver Assistance Systems have gone from luxury-car garnish to regulated equipment faster than any safety technology since the airbag — and the gap between what these systems do and what drivers believe they do is now a safety issue in its own right. Here's the plain-language decode, the limits that matter, and the checks worth running before buying a used car wearing these badges.
Every system on this page assists a driver. As of 2026, no car on sale in Australia is approved to drive itself — a car with every acronym fitted still has exactly one entity responsible for the crash, and it's holding the wheel.
The big four, decoded
- AEB — Autonomous Emergency Braking. Cameras and/or radar watch ahead; if a collision looks imminent and you don't react, the car brakes itself. Modern versions add pedestrian, cyclist and intersection detection. This is the acronym with the strongest evidence behind it — real-world studies (including insurer data analysed in Australia) have consistently found large reductions in rear-end crashes, which is why Australian Design Rules have phased in AEB requirements for new vehicles from 2023 onward.
- ACC — Adaptive Cruise Control. Cruise control that maintains a gap to the car ahead, slowing and accelerating with traffic; "stop-and-go" versions handle jams. It steers nothing (that's the next item) and it's a comfort feature, not a collision system.
- LKA / LKAS — Lane Keeping. Two very different things share the badge: lane-departure warning (beeps/vibrates when you drift over a line) and lane-keeping assist (nudges the steering back). "Lane centring" goes further, actively holding the middle of the lane while your hands stay on the wheel. Which one a car has changes the driving experience completely — listings rarely say, so check.
- BSM — Blind Spot Monitoring and RCTA — Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. Radar in the rear corners lighting a mirror icon when something sits in your blind spot, and warning of crossing traffic while reversing out. Unglamorous, genuinely useful, and increasingly standard.
Beyond the big four: traffic-sign recognition (reads speed signs — imperfectly, as any Australian who's been "warned" about a school zone at midnight knows), driver-monitoring cameras (watching you for fatigue and attention — required for top ANCAP scores in recent protocols), auto high beam, and reversing AEB.
What the acronyms don't do
The limits are where the safety lives:
- Weather and grime. Cameras squint in low sun, heavy rain and fog; a muddy bumper can blind radar. Systems disable themselves — politely, via a dashboard icon many drivers never notice.
- The handover trap. Systems that steer and brake competently for minutes at a time invite attention drift, then hand back control at precisely the moment things are hardest. Treat lane centring as a co-pilot who might quit without notice.
- Marketing names outrun capability. Names implying autonomy — from any brand — describe Level 2 assistance: the driver is responsible, continuously. Australian regulators and courts treat it that way too.
The used-car angle: ADAS has a service life
This is the part buyers skip. Driver-assist hardware lives in vulnerable places — cameras behind windscreens, radar behind bumpers — and it doesn't heal itself:
- Windscreen replacement now involves the safety system. A camera-equipped windscreen needs recalibration after replacement, which is why the glass bill on a five-year-old SUV can startle. Ask whether it was done and by whom; an uncalibrated camera can misread lanes by metres.
- Bumper repairs can silently degrade radar. After crash repairs, ask for evidence the sensors were recalibrated — a paint-shop bumper swap without it is common.
- Test the systems on the test drive. Confirm no ADAS warning lights, try ACC on a highway stretch if possible, and check the blind-spot icons light on passing traffic. A permanently-on "check camera" icon is a real cost, not a quirk — and it can matter at roadworthy time and resale.
