Electric cars have gone from unusual to ordinary on Australian roads, and the questions people ask have shifted with them. Fewer are about whether an EV works at all, and more are about the practical detail: what it costs to charge at home, how far one really goes, and what the battery will be worth in five years.

This page answers the questions we hear most often, with Australian context as at August 2026. Where the answer depends on your electricity plan, your driving or where you live, we say so rather than handing you a national average that won't match your situation.

Watch out

Charge from a dedicated wall socket on its own circuit — not an extension lead, a power board or a double adaptor. A portable charger draws close to the full rated current of a 10-amp power point for hours at a stretch, and that sustained load is exactly what cheap leads, tired outlets and older wiring fail at. Have a licensed electrician check the circuit and the outlet before you rely on it night after night.

How far will an electric car actually go on a charge?

Less than the number on the brochure. The claimed figure comes from a standardised laboratory test, while the Australian Government-funded Real-World Testing Program run by the Australian Automobile Association drives the same cars on public roads — the EV results it had published as at mid-2026 came in under their lab figures, with shortfalls reported from around 3 per cent to around 30 per cent depending on the model. As a planning rule, taking 10–20 per cent off the claimed figure is a sensible starting point for mixed driving. Sustained highway speed is one of the biggest factors, because air resistance climbs sharply with speed, and hot days with the air conditioning working, cold mornings, hills, roof racks and towing each take a further bite.

How long does it take to charge an electric car at home?

From a standard 10-amp power point, expect roughly 10–15 km of range per hour, so an overnight charge adds something like 100–150 km — enough to cover a typical day's driving for a lot of people. A 7kW wallbox is around three times quicker, at roughly 40 km of range per hour, and will refill most cars from low to full overnight. Homes with three-phase power can go faster again if the car accepts it. The mental shift is that home charging isn't a petrol stop: you plug in when you get home and the car is ready in the morning, so the charging speed matters far less than you'd expect. Do I need to install a wallbox, or will a normal power point do?

A wallbox isn't compulsory and plenty of owners manage without one. If you drive under about 50 km a day and can plug in most nights, a standard power point on a dedicated, electrician-checked circuit is usually enough. A wallbox earns its place if you cover longer distances, need to top up quickly between trips, have a large battery, or want to schedule charging into an off-peak window or soak up your own rooftop solar. Installed prices as at mid-2026 were commonly quoted somewhere around $1,500–$3,000 for a 7kW single-phase unit, but the cable run from your switchboard to where the car parks swings that a long way — get a couple of quotes rather than working off a figure you read online.

Is charging an EV cheaper than buying petrol?

At home, usually yes, but by how much depends almost entirely on your electricity tariff, which is why a single national figure misleads more than it helps. A typical EV uses somewhere around 15–20 kWh per 100 km, so multiply that by the rate on your own bill and compare it with what you currently spend on fuel — that arithmetic, on your numbers, is the comparison worth trusting. Overnight off-peak windows and EV-specific plans are typically priced below general daytime rates, some retailers now offer a cheap midday window aimed at soaking up solar, and charging from your own rooftop system is cheaper again, while charging on a flat tariff in the middle of the day narrows the gap considerably. Worth allowing for over a long ownership period: governments have been working on road user charging for electric vehicles, at least one state has already legislated a per-kilometre charge that switches on at a future trigger, and the federal position has shifted more than once — so check where the rules stand where you live before you bank on today's numbers. How long does an EV battery last, and what does the warranty actually cover?

Batteries degrade gradually rather than failing suddenly, and the real-world picture is more reassuring than the reputation suggests — published fleet data generally shows cars a few years old still holding most of their original capacity, with full pack replacements under warranty relatively uncommon. Battery warranties in Australia commonly run 7–10 years with a kilometre cap, but the detail varies a great deal by manufacturer, and the summary on a comparison site is not a reliable guide. Read the actual warranty booklet: some promise a minimum capacity level while others cover defects but exclude gradual capacity loss altogether, and the battery warranty is frequently a different term from the vehicle warranty even though the two get conflated. Watch the exclusions too — some warranties are void or reduced if the car has been used for rideshare, taxi or hire work — and remember the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law apply separately from whatever a manufacturer's warranty document says. Are electric cars cheaper to service?

Generally yes, and it's one of the more dependable savings. There's no engine oil, spark plugs, timing belt or exhaust system to look after, and regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so brake pads often last considerably longer than on a petrol car. Scheduled servicing doesn't disappear — brake fluid, coolant, cabin filter, tyre rotation and a battery and software health check are typical, and because the friction brakes get used lightly, cleaning and lubricating the calipers so they don't seize becomes part of the job. The reliable way to compare is the manufacturer's published capped-price servicing schedule, which most brands list online for their petrol and electric models, so you can price the actual cars you're weighing up rather than trusting an average. The offset is tyres: EVs are heavier and deliver torque instantly, so tyres tend to wear faster, and the correct replacements are often a more expensive load-rated size.

Can I take an electric car on a road trip?

Yes, with a bit more planning than a petrol car needs. Australia had more than 5,000 public charging locations as at mid-2026, including hundreds of DC fast-charging sites concentrated along the main highway corridors, so the major routes between capitals are reasonably covered — though coverage thins noticeably in remote areas and on secondary roads. Plan around chargers rather than distance alone, and check a live status app before committing to a leg, because one broken or occupied charger in a small town rewrites the afternoon. Budget for the cost too: DC fast charging commonly ran between about 40c and 70c per kWh as at mid-2026, with ultra-rapid sites, non-member rates and per-session fees pushing it higher, so it sits well above off-peak home charging and a long trip narrows the running-cost advantage rather than widening it. Can an electric car power my house in a blackout?

Not by default — most EVs won't back-feed a house simply because they're plugged in. Some models offer vehicle-to-load (V2L), which is a standard power outlet on the car itself: genuinely useful for a fridge, lights, a kettle or power tools, but it doesn't energise your house wiring. Powering the home properly means vehicle-to-home or vehicle-to-grid, which needs a car that supports it plus a bidirectional charger approved for use here, and the list of approved units was still short as at mid-2026. Connecting one also involves your electricity distributor, in the same way a home battery or a solar system does, so it isn't a plug-and-play purchase. Prices are commonly quoted above $5,000 before installation, so treat this as an emerging capability rather than a standard EV feature — and if backup power is the real goal, price it against a conventional home battery first.

Is an electric car more expensive to insure?

Usually, and often by a wide margin — comparison data published in 2026 put the average comprehensive premium for an electric car at roughly 40 per cent above the average for a petrol car, although that compares whole fleets rather than like for like, and EVs skew newer and more expensive. The reasons are structural rather than anything about how EV owners drive: the battery pack can account for a third or more of the car's value, damage near the pack can turn a moderate collision into a write-off, and fewer smash repairers are certified to work on high-voltage systems, which means fewer competing quotes and longer repair times. Get quotes for the exact model and variant before you commit, because the gap varies a great deal from car to car. Then fold the premium into your running-cost sums alongside the fuel and servicing savings, so you're comparing the whole picture rather than the flattering half of it.

What should I check when buying a used electric car?

Start with battery state of health, which is the used-EV equivalent of a compression test and a service history combined — ask the seller for a battery health report, or pay for an independent test. Confirm how much battery warranty remains and whether it carries over to you, since the terms often differ from the vehicle warranty and some are reduced or void if the car has done rideshare or hire work. Test both AC and DC charging if you can, because a fault can show up on one and not the other. Do the ordinary used-car checks as well: a PPSR check for money owing, a written-off record or a stolen listing, full service history, and a diagnostic scan for stored fault codes.
